Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease affecting millions of people worldwide. This skin disease is characterized by inflammation and scaling due to overactive outer layer of the skin. This layer starts to produce cells faster than normal and collects on the surface leading to scaling.

Cutting across all age groups, the patients suffer major emotional distress, pain in the joints and continuous discomfort. The major symptoms are reddening, thickening of the skin patches, itching, burning and scales formation. The patches at the joints may crack and ooze. There are many body parts which are affected - elbows, knees, back, and scalp, soles of feet, fingernails and toes.
Scalp psoriasis is a common problem affecting majority of the people. It ranges from mild to severe, with thick scales covering the whole scalp. It is very painful, itchy and cause severe hair loss.

For more sever cases, the standard psoriasis treatment is phototherapy. This system of treatment involves exposing the scalp or affected part to ultra violet rays. While other forms of treatment are application of topical creams and antibiotic applications. However, there are many organic and natural psoriasis treatment methods. There are known herbs and plants that have the properties to eliminate this disease by working from inside the body.

Psoriasis is one of the most common skin problems and can be caused by a wide range of factors often working together. Psoriasis is a non-contagious skin condition that commonly affects the knees, elbow and scalp but it may occur in other areas (although rarely on the face). Bright pink, raised patches covered with white scales appear on the skin. The complaint is caused by an over production of the epidermal cells and may be triggered by stress. The root of the problem has to be identified - so that it can be adequately addressed and eliminated. The underlying cause is usually increased toxins in the body and this is compounded by nutritional deficiencies.

Psoriasis is an indication that the body has toxic build up. The toxins have overloaded the liver and kidneys in particular. The toxins are circulating in the blood and the body is trying to remove them via the skin. This means that there will not be lasting relief gained from external applications to the psoriasis area alone. There needs to be a thorough internal cleansing of the blood and elimination organs - in particular the colon (which is the place where toxic build up begins), liver and kidneys. When these organs are cleansed (and the quantity of toxins that enter the body reduced) the toxins can be eliminated effectively and there is no need for the body to use the skin to eliminate large amounts of toxins. The reduction in toxins that are eliminated via the skin give the skin a chance to heal from the irritation that the toxins have caused and thus a healing of the psoriasis.

Some cases of psoriasis are made worse by:

  • the consumption of alcohol
  • the lack of fresh fruit and vegetables in the diet
  • nutritional deficiencies, including: folic acid, selenium, zinc, and calcium
  • a sluggish liver

What you can do to treat psoriasis

  • It is important that you assist your body to remove toxins and limit your exposure to as many toxins as you are able. This means helping your colon, liver and kidneys in particular. You also need to remove as many toxic chemicals from your environment as you can - anything that you do to reduce the toxic load that you body has to deal with will be of benefit.
  • Avoid alcohol as it has a toxic effect on the body and places a great strain on your liver.
  • Undertake measures to manage stress levels.
  • Eat as much fresh fruit and vegetables as possible.
  • Avoid eating wheat, oats, barley and rye, to which you may have a food sensitivity.
  • Increase your intake of essential fatty acids, particularly omega 3 (this is well known to help psoriasis).
  • Take a good multivitamin and mineral supplement. Make sure that the supplement has vitamin A, E and Zinc as these are needed for healing. The vitamins and minerals recommended on this site contain the nutrients that are needed for you to heal in a balance that will enable then to be used and absorbed effectively.
  • Cleanse your colon. The basis of internal cleansing starts with your colon. When your colon is clean then the other organs of elimination such as your liver, kidney and of course your skin are less likely to be overloaded. You can use a combination of a healthy diet plus the addition of probiotics, fiber and digestive enzymes as an effective way to cleanse you colon.

Herbal remedies for psoriasisCertain herbs are indicated in psoriasis and most of these are alternatives. That is, herbs that correct toxic situations in the blood stream and restore healthier functioning. It is uncertain how alternatives actually work but they are most often used in the context of skin conditions such as psoriasis. The herbs include:

  • burdock root
  • cleavers
  • dandelion
  • figwort
  • mountain grape
  • red clover
  • sarsparilla
  • yellow dock

The herbs dandelion and yellow dock also work on the liver. Cleavers and figwort act on clearing toxins from the kidneys. The use of one or more herbs to work on the nervous system may also be appropriate if stress is an issue. If you wish to prepare your own herbal treatments the following basic herbal formula can be added to with other specific herbs as needed.

  • 1 part burdock
  • 1 part cleavers
  • 1 part sarsparilla
  • 1 part yellow dock

Combine the herbs. You need about as much of the combined herb as you would for a cup of coffee. Then add a cup of boiling water. Allow this to stand for 10-15 minutes and let the mixture cool slightly. Strain the mixture before you drink it. This tea should be drunk three times per day over a long period.External remedies will ease irritation or help to remove the scales, but will not give permanent relief. Ointments for this purpose can be made from comfy, chickweed or marshmallow.

When the colon, liver and kidneys are cleansed and there is a reduction in the toxins in the body the skin has a chance to heal from the psoriasis. This is not something that is accomplished overnight - it takes time for the elimination organs to clear and begin to work effectively and to clear toxins from the body. These can only be accomplished with a comprehensive approach to healing and health. This approach needs to include cleansing, diet and nutritional support, vitamin and mineral supplements, stress management and reduced exposure to toxins.

If you suspect a member of your family, a close friend or you yourself suffer from psoriasis, it is useful to be able to recognise the symptoms of psoriasis so that you can get the right kind of medical treatment that is required to control the different kinds of psoriasis manifestations that occur.

If you see that someone is suffering from psoriasis, you can examine the affected area and do some research on the internet to help them find some remedies that will help to reduce the itching, redness, scaly skin and other, sometimes unsightly symptoms. You may want to ask your dermatologist or doctor for a list of symptoms that the disease has.

Common indicators of psoriasis are burning and itching sensations that are often associated with rashes and other skin problems. A lot of people that suffer from psoriasis get scaly skin and lesions. This can cause the skin to crack and flake due to becoming very dry. Other symptoms to look out for when psoriasis is suspected are red spots that can be seen on certain parts of a person’s body, like the elbows, the scalp, the genital areas, and the knees.

Once you are familiar with the symptoms of psoriasis, it is important to consult your dermatologist or doctor to help you or the affected person with this skin condition to get a remedy for the uncomfortable and sometimes painful flare-ups that regularly occur with psoriasis.

Psoriasis treatments vary depending on the type and severity of psoriasis the person is suffering from and the places where the flare-ups and scales are found. An easily treatable type of psoriasis is the kind that is found on the scalp. This type is known as scalp psoriasis. Scalp psoriasis has the same symptoms, scaly skin and lesions that is often found on the elbows and knees. Scalp psoriasis affects sufferers around the nape and on the scalp itself. This form of psoriasis can be treated with ointments and topical creams that are formulated to remove these lesions and flakes. Anti dandruff shampoos can be used to remove the flakes from the person’s hair and other lotions and creams can be used to reduce the redness and itchiness of the lesions themselves.

Guttate psoriasis can be treated at home when the case is not too severe. By keeping the skin moist it will be help to minimize the irritation that a dry skin brings. After bathing it can help to apply a think cream that will trap water against the skin and will soothe any burning sensations.

Pustular psoriasis is usually seen in adults. Pustular psoriasis is characterized by white pustules (blisters of non infectious pus) surrounded by red skin. The pus consists of white blood cells and is not an infection, nor is it contagious. It may be localized to certain areas of the body-for example, the hands and feet or it can be generalized, covering most of the body. It tends to go in a cycle, reddening of the skin followed by the formation of pustules and scaling.

Psoriasis can become rather unsightly and can cover a large area of the body which may become very stressful and uncomfortable for the sufferer. Over the years there has been a lot of research conducted on psoriasis so if you suffer from the disease ensure you contact your dermatologist or doctor as they may be able to give you some medication that will help treat the symptoms of psoriasis. Do your best to reduce stress as this is a major cause of a lot of psoriasis outbreaks.
